Canine atopic dermatitis is a chronic disease that requires a long-term plan for management. In today’s world, there are multiple anchor therapies to discuss with owners including three different Janus kinase inhibitors as well as anti-IL 31 monoclonal antibodies. However, challenging cases may require a multimodal approach to help provide the greatest possible control of disease. As there is no one-size-fits-all approach to managing chronic atopic dermatitis, complementary therapies should be discussed with clients. This can include barrier replacement, dietary supplementation, anti-infective topical therapy regimens, and parasite prevention, while keeping in mind which flare factors can cause acute worsening of chronic allergic disease.
