This course provides equine veterinarians with a research-based and clinically relevant review of pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS) for the management of degenerative joint disease (DJD) in horses. The session reviews the pharmacology and mechanisms of action of PPS, including anabolic, anti-catabolic, anti-inflammatory, and vascular effects relevant to osteoarthritis. Experimental models and clinical field studies evaluating the safety and efficacy of PPS will be discussed to provide an evidence-based perspective on its therapeutic role. Case examples and practitioner experience will be used to illustrate how PPS is incorporated into clinical practice, including dosing strategies, administration considerations, and integration into multimodal osteoarthritis management plans. Participants will gain practical guidance on selecting appropriate cases, understanding safety considerations, and applying current evidence to optimize outcomes for horses with osteoarthritis.
