Physical rehabilitation is a powerful modality that can improve patient care and well-being. Nutrition plays a key role in physical rehabilitation by providing the building blocks for the body’s musculoskeletal system. Nutrients are critical in surgical recovery/wound healing, physical performance enhancement, weight management and improved conditioning/geriatric care patients. Nutritional assessments should be performed for every rehabilitation patient because malnutrition is a significant limitation on the success of physical rehabilitation. Nutrients essential for rehabilitation include macronutrients (protein, fats, carbohydrates) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals). A supplement plan can also be optimized to support body tissues/organs during a rehabilitation program. Select nutrients will be discussed including omega 3 fatty acids, antioxidants, glucosamine/chondroitin, anti-inflammatory herbs (Boswellia and turmeric), and phytocannabinoids. Lastly, nutrients that can support the body during times of stress and recovery are discussed. Cases will be presented to highlight management of nutrition and supplements during physical rehabilitation.
Learning Objectives:
* Review the benefits that physical rehabilitation provides, the wide spectrum of
patients that may benefit from its use and the modalities employed.
* Understand the importance of nutrition in supporting the physical rehabilitation
patient and how malnutrition or nutrient deficiencies can compromise
outcomes.
* Review proper nutritional assessment of veterinary patients.
* Review the role of macronutrients, micronutrients and supplemental nutrients
in physical rehabilitation and their potential benefits.
